How to Give Your Basics a Makeover

Don't be basic.

There are certain pieces that hang in every woman's closet: a blazer, the perfect pair of jeans, a comfy T shirt... they are our beloved basics. The problem with basics is, well, they can be basic. So how do you give your wardrobe staples a makeover?

We experimented with different styles, layered and layered, played with informality, and added a few statement pieces to a LBD (little black dress), a pencil skirt, and a V neck.

Here's how to make your basics stand out:

1. The LBD

Go BOHO

LBDs are structured for more traditional settings. A kimono softens a LBD, giving it a carefree, bohemian vibe. We love this Banana Republic kimono--add a trendy necklace and your look is complete.

Give it an edge

Embrace your inner punk and experiment with a denim vest and grungy, feminine heels. You can accessorize all you want, but this look is more about attitude than anything else.

Denim Vest, Love Culture, $12.79

Reimagine menswear

Like a LBD, menswear will never go out of style. Slip on a pair of loafers and maintain balance by incorporating feminine details. This Express floral blouse provides femininity and accents the loafers' plum color--perfect.

Pick a statement piece

If a neon floral print blazer isn't a statement piece, we don't know what is. Layer over a simple black tank to draw more attention to the blazer--not that it really needs it.

Neon Floral Blazer, Ann Taylor LOFT, $24.79

2. The pencil skirt

Dress it down

If you can pull off wearing pajamas during the day, do it. Pair a slouchy sweatshirt top reminiscent of your fave at-home hoodie with a structured pencil skirt. Complete the comfy-chic look by partially tucking your sweater.

Sweater Top, Banana Republic, $19.79

Focus on your intimates

A modest bralette peaking out underneath a sheer tank is the perfect sexy detail that a stiff pencil skirt needs. This look, although adorable, is not for the faint of heart. It is however, perfect for wine night with the ladies.

Sheer Collared Tank, Nikicio Femme, $19.79

3. The V Neck

Mix patterns

Mixing patterns is an easy way to liven a basic piece. Luckily, stripes are essentially a neutral, so experiment boldly with a variety of prints--just remember to keep prints in the same color family.

Brushstroke Print Skirt, J Crew, $24.79

Pair with a button up

A button up is a basic in itself. Potentially, mixing two basics together makes them both interesting. But just in case, pair your basics with fun accessories, like this daisy applique bag.

Plaid Button Up, American Eagle, $12.79

Layer under a dress

When in doubt, layer. We layered a long sleeve dress over the V neck to avoid competing sleeve lengths. Try a strappy, jumper style dress for a more youthful feel.

Long Sleeve Dress, Hard Tail, $16.79
